The Adventures of Lion "Lil" Pete

Hi my name is Lion Pete Stevens, "Lil" Pete to my friends and I'll be serving in the newly crated position of 1st Vice Zone Chair for this coming year for Region II Zone 3 District 11E-1 of the Michigan Lions.  I will be helping our Zone Chair with his duties by visiting all the clubs in our zone and attending as many of their functions as I can in to help promote their clubs, events and most importantly visitation between clubs.

Now just a little about me, As you can see from my picture I'm not your average Lion but then again Lions can come in all ages, shapes and sizes, I'm about 2 feet tall a woodsman by trade retired from the forestry service and recently relocated from Evart now living near one of the our lakes here in the Cadillac area.  I'm a firm believer in what the Lions organization stands for and the work they do to help and support those with vision, hearing related challenges.   OH Yeah did I mention I'm a Garden Gnome?

This website will include pictures and stories of my travels and the people I meet over this coming year.  Each of the clubs in our zone (Baldwin, Cadillac, Evart, and Luther) have graciously agreed to let me visit each of their clubs for 30 days at a time so I can see first hand what they do and get the chance to know their members.

I'm currently staying with the Cadillac club and recently attended their "Picnic in the Park" open community meeting.  It was loads of fun, the rain even stopped a few hours before and the sun kept peaking out from behind the clouds drying things up nicely.  I got to meet most of the club and their families and even had the chance to sit down with their President Lion Rick Coccia and go over club strategies for the coming year.  Check out these pictures from the Picnic Meeting which they held on August 20th.

With two grills going one cooking up hotdogs for the visiting members of the community while the other was grilling up brats for the club members good food and fellowship was enjoyed by all that attended.  Music soon filled the air when the free jazz concert being held across the street at the Rotary Pavilion started and some of the club members went across to enjoy the band and pass out free hotdogs to those in attendance.

After making my rounds at the picnic/meeting and being introduced to everyone I join my fellow Lions for a plate of food as we discuss the clubs upcoming "Sight for Life" golf outing.  It sounds like fun I already volunteered to help work the event and maybe get the chance to hit a ball or two.

I think this is going to be a interesting year and I can't wait to meet all the other clubs in my zone.  I have a zone meeting down in Evart on the 9th and I'll get the chance to meet a whole bunch of my fellow 11E-1 Lions when I attend IPDG Larry Morlocks appreciation dinner next week down in Big Rapids.

I look forward to helping our Zone Chair this year and also our clubs in anyway I can.  Keep checking back to see what I'm up to and what's going on with the clubs in Region II Zone 3.

Thanks

Cadillac's "Sight for Life" Golf Outing

Hi again it's "Lil" Pete it's August 22nd and the Cadillac Lions just had their 3rd Annual "Sight for Life" golf outing at the Missaukee Golf Club over by Lake City and it was a fun, wet day with the rain coming down off and on throughout most of the event.  We played 18 holes and did everything from putting with a driver to driving with a putter, we also had a opposite hand tee-off and a blind tee-off where you have to get blindfolded then try to hit the ball.  It was pretty much duck and cover on that hole!

The day came off well with 11 foursomes playing and with the shotgun start things moved along pretty fast.  We sold mulligan's and 50/50 tickets at the start of the outing (I helped out selling the Mulligan's) and had an awards luncheon afterwards where we so more 50/50 and tickets for random prizes, we gave out 109 prizes in total.

I'd say 90% of the club was in attendance and may other golfers were there just to enjoy the day.  Between all the tickets sold and the money raised from the golf itself the club took in over $2000 for the 1 day event.  Not to bad huh!

Lion Tom Jones gave me a lift out to the hole I was working where I helped out on the links demonstrating how to hit the ball at the blind hole.  You can check out the photos below if you like.  I can't wait for next weekend to go down to IPDG Larry Morlocks appreciation dinner it will be great to meet all the Lions from the other clubs.

Well until next time.

Thanks

IPDG Lion Larry Morlock's Appreciation dinner

Wow...tonight was fun it's August 29th and I just attended IPDG Lion Larry Morlock's Appreciation dinner down at the Holiday Inn in Big Rapids.  Man there sure was a whole lot of people there tonight.  Besides who you see me with in the picture at our table was Lions Deb & Shelby Struble from the Evart Club, they invited me down next Saturday to visit and help out at the pig roast their club is having during the big car show down at Riverside Park in Evart.  I also got to sit and talk with 2nd VDG John Monahan and his wife and of course our ZC and his wife Lion Christina.

Lets see now what else happened tonight...I met PDG Lion Janilee McClure who invited me down to speak at her club in White Cloud, oh man I'm not sure what I'm going to speak about but I'm sure I'll come up with something.  I met and talked with so many people, so many Lions and each welcomed me into my new position and wished me good luck with this coming year.

Well this night was about IPDG Larry and showing him how much we appreciated all the fine work he did for us the past year.  There were speeches and awards, rounds of applause, and oh yeah after dinner we had cake...very good cake.  Lion Larry not only had his fellow lions there but family and several visiting Governors from the other districts from around the state.  At the end of the night I was lucky enough to meet and have my picture taken with both IPDG Larry and the new District Governor Wayne Kreitner  (See the picture below).

Hey I almost forgot to ask, how do you like my tie?  I was told the dinner was business causal so I had to break out my power tie.  You know it's funny how no one commented just how must DG Wayne and I look alike I noticed it right off the bat. Oh Well I bet if I was wearing my glasses someone would have mentioned it.

Well I'd better go, it's been a long day but I'll be back next week.  I have a club visitation with my ZC at the Cadillac Club on Tuesday and then another one in Luther on Wednesday.  This year is just starting and we're off and running already.  Until next time!

Thanks

1st Visitation Cadillac Lions Club

It's September 1st...wow the summer sure went by fast!  Tonight I did my very 1st Region II Zone 3 club visitation with my Zone Chair, I was kind of nervous but decided I'd just follow his lead.   We visited the Cadillac Lions Club, they meet at McGuire's Resort the 1st and 3rd Tuesdays of each month.  I've had a chance to meet most of the club since I have been doing an extended visitation here for the past 12 days and have already been able to attend a couple of their events.

As a visiting guest I got to sit at the head table right next to the club's King Lion Rick Coccia (sitting next to him is club treasurer Lion Bill Taylor).  The meeting opened with the pledge and a prayer then went straight into dinner over which the room was full of many different conversations at the various tables.

One of the main topics was the fact we were served prime rib for dinner!  I was just grabbing a dinner roll and the steak sauce when this picture was taken.  Other conversations seemed to be about money and the increase in amount of vision  assistance requests that have been coming into the club.

After dinner that conversation moved to be a big part of the meeting.   Last years budget was gone over and projections for the coming year were made.  The out come was that the clubs worried if things continue the requests for vision assistance will soon out way the club's monies coming in.

So new criteria was set on who help will be given to and their budget for this year was trimmed to make way for the anticipated continuing increase in vision related assistance requests.  Other then that there was some brief correspondence, the announcement that a member Lion Wes Bueker has resigned due to health reasons, and updates from recently past and upcoming fundraisers.  The meeting practically ran itself.  It ended with the tail twister announcing the 50/50 winner then the meeting was adjourned.

1 meeting down and 3 more visits to go, tomorrow night I'm off to the Luther Lions Den with my ZC.  This weekend on Saturday the 5th I have the pig roast down in Evart and then next week on the 9th we have our 1st Zone Meeting down in Evart at the town hall.  I'll post my next update tomorrow night after the meeting in Luther.  Until next time!

2nd Visitation Luther Lions Club

It's Wednesday September 2nd and I just returned with my ZC from the Luther Lions Den were we just finished our second club visitation.  The Luther Lions meet on the 1st and 3rd Wednesday of each month and man are they ever a busy club.  They just finished hosting a 4 day Texas Hold-um tournament down in Big Rapids and they already have 3 more scheduled before the end of the year.  Everyone knows Luther in a working club you can't turn on your radio without hearing about one event or another they are having.

Well just over the upcoming Labor day weekend they have a Horse Pull and concession planned on Saturday the 5th and then music and a dance that same evening.  Then without even missing a beat they're having a full menu breakfast on Sunday morning the 6th and a horse shoe tournament and concessions for that too!  I volunteered to come back over this weekend and help work the breakfast on Sunday you can get a good feel for a club seeing how they work together.

The rest of the meeting ran pretty smooth, their new furnace is getting delivered, their lawn mower recently died on them so they voted to hire a neighbor who had stepped forward and offer to mow their yard instead of buying a new mower right now, they thought it would be better maybe to wait and see if they go on sale at the end of the year.  They scheduled their highway cleanup day and of course lined up all their upcoming events and fundraisers for the next month.

A very notable thing happened during the meeting a 25yr membership pin from LCIF was awarded to Lion Beverly Armstrong for outstanding service to the Luther Lions Club.  The award was accompanied by applause and congratulations from her fellow club members.  Our ZC spoke then formally introduced me to the club and afterwards we sold a lot of our new district pins to the club members.  Lastly the 50/50 winner was drawn and the meeting adjourned, all in all I think this was a very good meeting!

Well I better go I need to get some rest but I'll be back after I finish helping with the Pig Roast down in Evart on Saturday, it will be good practice since I'll now be helping out the Luther Club with their breakfast on Sunday.  Oh yeah don't forget our 1st Zone Meeting is next week Wednesday the 9th down in Evart at the Township Hall.  Wow...finally my first zone meeting it should be fun!  Until next time!

Thanks

Evart's Pig Roast in the Park

Happy Labor Day Weekend!  It's Saturday September 5th and I just left Evart where the Evart Car Club was holding their Annual Labor Day Weekend Classic Car Show down at the Riverside Park.  I was there because the Evart Lions Club were having a pig roast during that car show.

At 2:30am this morning Lions Shelby Struble, Rick Aube, Randy Van Buren fired up the roasters and started cooking. The meat was injected with fruit juices to added to it moistness as the pig roasters slow cooked the 14 butt roasts getting them ready to be served.

Here I am with Evart Club President Tamie Lundborg  passing out buns and butter to the people as they go through the line.  279 meals were served today and beside the roast pork, coleslaw, baked beans, roll & butter, milk were the other items the meal included.

The food and car show were both great and the lions club made $955.00 from the day.  While walking around checking out the cars I bought a raffle ticket, it was to try to win a 1978 Corvette from the people at Eagle Village but didn't end-up winning.  Oh well the money went to a good cause and besides I'm pretty sure my foot wouldn't have reached the gas pedal anyways at least not where I could still see over the steering wheel if it did.

Well I'm not sure how I looked in a hair net but we'll see if I have to wear one again tomorrow when I head back over to the Luther Lions Club to help out with their full menu Sunday breakfast.  I like these trips, not only do I get to help out the clubs in our zone but there always seems to be some good food around as well. Until tomorrow!

Thanks

Luther Lions Club Full Menu Breakfast

Good Morning! Well I guess it's not morning anymore but when my day started it sure was.  It's Sunday September 6th and I just returned from the Luther Lions Den where I helped out the club during their full menu breakfast.

I had barely made it in the front door when I was snagged by Lions Eddy McCarthy & Shirley Flynn to help them greet and collect money from the people as the enter the building.  In the picture on the left I had just purchased some 50/50 tickets from Lion Eddy so I'm keeping one eye on her to make sure those lucky ones in her hand don't get passed off to anyone else but me.

This has been a very busy weekend so far for the Luther Lions, yesterday they have had a Horse Pull with concession and then last night live music and a dance here at their club house.  Now today this breakfast and starting just afterwards a horse shoe tournament with yet another concession.  This is a working club.

The turn out this morning was great with 118 people in total attending the breakfast.  The room began to fill quickly while I was there and the guys in the kitchen (left to right in the picture below) Lions Norm Slosser - King Lion Bob Flynn - Chuck Draper were kept hoping filling peoples plates with all the great food.   I stopped out to the kitchen when I saw how busy they were getting to see if I could lend a hand in anyway.  Two full cases of sausages were cooked up, 2 1/2 bags of pancake mix made its way to the griddle on top of that about 8 loaves of Texas toast was used in making the French toast also between 3 to 5 lb of sliced ham baked and eggs lots and lots of eggs were all served or used.  Were all consumed by the many people (including myself) in attendance.

Well by the end of the breakfast I found out those tickets I had bought weren't so lucky after all when I didn't win the 50/50 but like the other people that stopped in here today I did enjoy some great food, and a great time with the Luther Lions, I also enjoyed helping out this fine club.  I even had a few of the diners stop over and take my picture while I was working and tell me what a fine looking Lion I was.  It could've been because I look just a little like Luther's King Lion Bob Flynn and everyone likes Lion Bob.

I did run into this fellow on my way out, but I figured he must be pretty tame beings how he's kept just outside the clubs front door.  I also figured he must be kept pretty happy and full with all the great food and companionship that always seems to be around this building.  But I still wasn't taking my eyes off him no sir-ee not for one second.

Well I guess this is goodbye until next week when we have our 1st Zone meeting over in Evart on Wednesday September the 9th.  Both of the VDG's will be there and we're having "Officer Training" as part of the meeting so there might even be a couple extra clubs in attendance.   Until next time!

Thanks

Region II Zone 3 - Zone Meeting in Evart

Hello...It's September 9th and I just returned from attending my first Zone meeting for the year.  It was down in Evart at the township hall and man I guess I can admit it now I was just a little bit nervous.  Our ZC has done this before but for me when I say this was my first zone meeting I mean it was MY 1st zone meeting. We will be having four all together this year, one at each of the clubs that make up our zone.

The attendance was great all the clubs from our zone were represented, we even had a few people from other clubs Big Rapids, Chippewa Lake, and even Mt Pleasant if you count 2nd VDG John Manahan.  The visitors where there to take the "Officer Training" which 2nd VDG John held during the meeting.  Evart's King Lion Tamie Lundborg opened the meeting (it's a courtesy our ZC does for the hosting club kind of paying them respect for having us all there) and it allows everyone the chance to get to share in another clubs opening ceremonies.

After the pledge and prayer dinner was announced and the meeting was turned over to our ZC who made a very popular announcement "Dinner is Served".  Dinner was laid out buffet style and it sure was a wonderful meal topped off with apple pie with whipped cream for dessert.  Good conversation and company were enjoyed over dinner with maybe just a few smart remarks exchanged between clubs.

Our ZC started after dinner by asking everyone to please stand and introduce who they were and what club they were from, it gives everyone the chance to know for sure who is there.  After the introductions the ZC went straight into business asking each club president to stand and give an update of their clubs membership and activities.   Even the visiting clubs when asked gladly stood and shared news about their clubs to everyone.

As the reports finished 2nd VDG John was asked to start the program for the night "Officer Training".  He passed out information on member retention, leadership, and spoke about the role of a president within a club.  I think everyone walked away with more insight and maybe with a few new ideas about their part in their clubs.

At that point the meeting was turned back over to our ZC who went over the governors goals for each club and his goals for the district for the coming year.  Then 1st VDG Laura Johnson was ask to stand and say a few words which she gladly did. The meeting was drawing to a close so the ZC asked that the 50/50 drawing be held and with the reading of the winning numbers (F.Y.I. Luther's Kings Lion Bob Flynn both drew and won the 50/50 there were a lot of raised eye brows and kidding).  After a Thank You to everyone from our ZC and myself for attending the meeting it was then turned back over to the president of the Evart club to be closed.

Before I could even gather my things to leave I was approached by Lion Deb Struble asking if I would mind staying for a few days to help out at the clubs concession stand during the "Spit and Whittle" at the fair grounds over the next few days.  It sounded like fun so of course I said yes, I'll update you all after I finish working a couple days at this great event.  This all works out great for me too I had nothing to do until the District Cabinet Meeting on Sunday anyways, now I get to help out and spend sometime with my fellow lions.  Until next time!

Evarts Spit and Whittle

It's Friday September 11th, Wow!  I was so busy with this event today that I almost forgot what this day is what this day means....silence....no one should ever forget September 11th and how it changed us all!  Well as I was about to say I just finished my first day helping out the Evart Lions Club with their food booth down at the fair grounds during the three day "Spit and Whittle" which is held down in Evart at each year.  This is the clubs last event at their food booth for this year and I couldn't wait to help out.

The "Spit and Whittle", which started back in 2001 is an informal get together of wood carvers that's open to all carvers or to anyone just interested in learning the ropes.  It is simply a weekend of carving and whittling on whatever you like.  Lots of visiting and just plain ole' 'R & R' meeting new friends and sharing information.  Carvers can enjoy this social carving weekend just sittin' around carvin' and chattin' with fellow carvers from Michigan, Indiana, Ohio, Illinois, Tennessee and Florida and Ontario Canada.

The Evart Lions Club's food booth serves breakfast & lunch on both Friday and Saturday then breakfast again on Sunday morning.  So I was there bright and early this morning to help out and just chompin' at the bit to start flipping a few eggs.  Things stayed fairly busy during breakfast but I was still able to meet and speak with a lot of very interesting people from all over while I worked.  I even had the chance to share some of my wood carving techniques and secrets as well as pick up a new trick or two myself.

The members of the Evart Lions Club sure know their stuff when it comes to running this food booth, and more important they know how to work as a team to see that everything is covered.  I was given several jobs while there today ranging from "Meet and Greet" stationed up by the menu sign to "Pie Police" were I had to guard the ever popular pies at the booth from quick handed samplers.  I did such a great job over breakfast with the eggs that during lunch I took a second turn at the grill this time flippin' burgers.

It was a fun day and it gets to start all over again tomorrow morning with breakfast again.  Unfortunately I'll have to leave early tomorrow, I have a District Cabinet Meeting down at Maxfields Restaurant on Sunday at 9am and I still have to get my notes together and prepare my zone reports about all my visits and clubs.  This is the Evart Clubs last event here at the fair grounds of the season, except for the Punt, Pass and Kick, where the club will be handing out hot dogs, chips and pop for free to the kids participating.

After helping out with their Pig Roast at Riverside Park the last weekend, I was happy to get the chance to come back so quick to spend a little more time with this fine club.  I felt right at home here after all I'm originally from Evart and I still have family in the area and this club always makes ME feel like family when I come down here to help.  I just can't figure out why whenever someone takes out a camera to take a picture here everyone else runs away?  Well I have one more day here and if it's anything like today I know I'm going to enjoy it.

Phew...I just caught a glimpse of myself in the glass today as I was checking out these pies, I'm starting to weigh in pretty heavy these days with all the fine food at the events and meetings I've been going to.  Ok starting tomorrow or maybe after the District Cabinet Meeting on Sunday I'll have to start setting some limits on myself at these visits, or at the very least try to.  But this one sure was Fun and Tasty though!!!

I have a lot to do tomorrow so I'll write again after the cabinet meeting at Maxfield's on Sunday.  Until next time!

Thanks

District 11E-1 Cabinet Meeting @ Maxfield's Restaurant

Ok first of all it wasn't my fault, I just want to make that one fact clear!  Sunday September 13th and we arrived late for the cabinet meeting.  I rode down to the meeting with my ZC and just because I was sitting in the passenger seat (he calls it the navigators seat) and we make a right when we should have made a left, It's NOT my fault!  He's got a TomTom for Pete's sake (no pun intended), instead of blaming me he needs to blame that stupid thing.

Well I'm told the meeting was called to order by DG Wayne at 9:30AM and was then followed by the pledge and prayer, we arrived sometime shortly after that.  The Governor was in the middle of his opening remarks as we made our way to our table.

The Governor stated that the new International President wants the emphasis to be changed this year from starting new clubs to strengthen our existing clubs by bringing in new members.  Our membership at this point is at a negative 3 with the good possibility of loosing 15 more with the Sheridan club having some issues.  DG Wayne is actively working with Sheridan.  DG Wayne again thanked everyone for being here and for everyone’s early start this year.

1st VDG Laura Johnson was asked to speak and she informed us that she will be the official representative of the Governor at all Zone and Region meetings as the Governor does not plan on attending any of these meetings.  She asked all Region and Zone Chairs to stress to their clubs not to drop any members until they have talked to them and asked why?

2nd VDG John Monahan spoke about Retention is the problem that all Lions need to work on and help their individual clubs with it.  We need to learn to appreciate each other and then we will get along better than what we do, although most members do their best.  It is important to include every member so that they feel a part of the club.  The whole idea is to get all members involved in their clubs.

Governor Wayne stated that he wants to start a new District Award to be presented at our District Convention.  The award will be a silver dollar with an engraving of Louis Braille on one side.  The award will be called the District 11-E1 Louis Braille Award.  The award will be fitted with a ribbon so that it can be worn around the neck, a plaque will also be presented to the recipient.  The criteria for presenting this award has not been worked out yet, but it will be presented to the cabinet, and a committee will make the selection.

Our District Treasurer Lion Kerry McGinley presented the financial statement for the District through Sept. 13, 2009.  Lion Kerry urged the Zone Chairs to talk to the clubs about their donations to the Ear Lab as they were down last year and not many clubs have donated so far.

Due to Convention Chair Lion Pam Schroeder absence a report was read on her behalf on 2009 District Convention.  Lion Pam asked in her report who was going to be on the committee with her this year as this will be her final year as chair.  DG Wayne stated that Lions Debbie Kreitner, Jane Raymor and Jan Mast will assist her.  The theme for the 2010 convention is “Down Home” and will be in Muskegon.

At this point the DG asked all Region and Zone Chairs to in turn stand and give reports only on the troubled or negative issues within the clubs in their areas.  He stated everyone as dinners and fundraisers but he wants to concentrate on the clubs and issues that are showing us some concern.  All three RC's gave or had sent in reports to be read and then seven of the nine CZ also gave or had read reports about the issues or non-issues in their areas.   At this time the Governor noticed we were a little ahead of schedule so he asked the representatives from the state projects that were there to speak.

First the All State Band State Chair PDG Brian Shepherd presented an update and some good information about the program.  He stated that the All State Band has made 33 consecutive appearances at the International Convention.  We expect about only 48 kids this year for the band due to the cost of going to Sydney, Australia.  While in Sydney, they will visit a local school, Escanaba High School, and participate with them at a band camp.  Escanaba High School will also allow our band to use some of their equipment so our band does not have to ship it over there.  DG Wayne thanked PDG Brian for all the information he presented.

Second PDG Rod Prys spoke to us about what Welcome Homes is doing. The new correct name is; Welcome Homes Residential Services.  They have partnered with 8 residential homes to assist the sight impaired.  They are all located in the Lower Peninsula but at the present time homes in Munising and Escanaba are considering signing contracts with W.H.R.S.  Welcome Homes goes into these homes and teaches the staff on how to deal with sight impaired clients.  DG Wayne thanked PDG Rod for coming and making the presentation.

DG Wayne spoke briefly about the upcoming Higgins Lake Leadership Conference and urged us all to talk about this training session with our clubs.  Then he adjourned the meeting for Lunch.

When we returned from lunch the MERLOW well I guess its MERLOF&W now were asked to give their reports.

MEMBERSHIP:  PDG Lynn Mast has not had any committee meetings yet and he feels this is a problem.  We seem never to get started before November and we should be going strong by September.  Sometimes Clubs have to change in order to get new members.  Ask yourself why would younger members want to join your club?  Have something planned for the new members, get them involved.

EXTENSION:  PDG Harry Johnson stated he held the first meeting of the state committee yesterday in Lansing.  Many items were discussed including Ludington, Grant, Reed City, Marion and Lake City.  These are areas in our District where clubs need to be formed or restarted.  He felt a lot of good was done yesterday.  He was asked by the Governor if the team from LCI would help clubs in getting new members.  Lion Harry said yes to that, and he and the Governor would work on getting the team into our District again.

RETENTION:  2nd VDG John Monahan has produced a CD on all the information from Lions International on retention and he has shared this material with Sheridan and the Lions at a zone meeting he attended.  2nd VDG Lion John said he would be happy to visit any club and put on a program.  Most problems that clubs have are problems with interaction between members.

LIONS QUEST:  PDG Harry Johnson reported that the first meeting will be the 3rd of Oct.  There will be a one day training session in Memphis prior to the USA/Canada Forum.  The committee will also look at getting a grant from LCI.

FAMILY & WOMEN’S INITIATIVE COMMITTEE: Lion Gayle Morlock reported that the new Cub Program is on LCI website.  You can download the booklet and the activity pages for children ages 0-12 years.  This new program is a great way to make your club a "Family Friendly" club and possibly attract younger members.

Next PDG Stan Preshaw our Peace Poster Chairman was absent so DG Wayne reported for Lion Stan that schools should be working on the Peace Poster now but if the clubs hurry they can still get schools active.  All posters will be judged from the District at the November Cabinet Meeting.  The State judging this year will be done by art teachers, not by the artless Governors.

When the DG asked if anyone else had any matters to bring up Lion Karla Roebuck brought up the IT committee and setting up the new Club websites.  This update for all our web sites has to be done soon. We were asked to please contact Lion Karla for any more information.

The last piece of business was our beloved "Tail Twister" he had been keeping notes on anyone who had spoken out of turn, or anyone who wasn't fully prepared when they were called on to speak and of course anyone who might have came in late, and he hit us all up for a fine.  Now to be fair he decided to ask a few questions to everyone present and anyone who didn't know the correct answers were fined as well.  Then just when you thought it was all over he pulls out a note and reads a challenge given to him by someone who regretfully couldn't be there today to fine each person already fined today an additional two more dollars and he had included a $2 bill to start things off.  After all fines were collected and with no further business the Motion to adjourn was made at 2:08 PM and the meeting ended.

This was an very interesting and yet costly meeting, I learned a lot about our district and its clubs.  I was little nervous this being my first District Cabinet Meeting and all but I was met with smiles and pats on the back from many of my fellow lions.  I sat next to our Region Chair Lion Tony Rutledge during the meeting and he told me what a great job I was doing so far.  I look forward to serving this year and helping the clubs in my or any other zone in anyway I can.

Well I guess that's it until Tuesday when I have my last meeting with the Cadillac Lions Club before heading off to start my next 30 day visitation, I believe I'm going down to the Evart Lions Club next.  Wow this first month has gone by so fast and I've been lucky enough to be able to visit most all the clubs in my zone, I just need to make it down to Baldwin yet.   I will soon though I was asked today if I could come down and help them with their Halloween Party they throw each year for the kids in their community and I know my ZC has a visitation scheduled before then that he will be wanting me to come along for.  Until Tuesday!

Thanks

Cadillac Lions Meeting out at Lion Pete's Cabin

September 15th and the Cadillac Lions Club just held one of its bi-yearly meetings out at Lion Pete Buehler's cabin in the woods out on his property near Cadillac.   They cookout on the grill, eat at picnic tables and when dinners over they have an informal business meeting then most break and play "TONK" poker.

Word must have gotten out about my mad grill skills at the "Spit and Whittle" down in Evart last week because when I arrived tonight I was put to work straight off  by Lion Buehler manning the grill.  I don't mind helping out this being my last meeting for a while with the Cadillac Club, man hard to believe a month has gone by all ready!

When the last of brats were done and everyone was served I joined my fellow lions at the picnic table to enjoy the great food we had in front of us.  The talk during dinner was about the game on TV last night, how much and when the dues for this year needed to be turned in Oh and of course just plain old BS and catching up with everyone.

After dinner the club's president Lion Rick Coccia called the business part of this meeting to order starting with the pledge and a prayer.  He then read some correspondence the club had received about the upcoming leadership training up at Higgins Lake, there was no interest in going from anyone in the club at this time.  Next he asked if there was any old business and Lion Tim Anderson shared what he had learned about the Lion of Michigan Service Foundation and how they would help the club with any future hearing assistance requests that my come in.  After a brief discussion the club agreed to have a speaker come in to learn more on how they might use the foundation to help those in this area.

Lions Gary Williams and Tom Olmstead spoke briefly about what program ideas if any the club would like to see at their meetings this year and if anyone knew of anyone that might be able to come in and do a program for the club.  A few ideas were shared and a list was made.  At this point the Lion of the Year award for last year was brought up and just who might have the plague which still needs to be presented to Lion Jim Higgins last years reciprocate.  It was determined that last years club president Dennis Hyzer had the award and would be bringing it to the next meeting.

When it was asked if anyone had any new business Lion Tim brought up the new Lion's Cub program and asked if the club would be willing to have one, he mentioned that his daughter Rachael wants to join and the Lions Jerod and Michelle's son Jay also wanted to join.  The vote was in favor of allowing the cubs program and with that maybe attracting some younger members.

Lion Tim said that with this decision he would be adding the term "Family Friendly" to the clubs website and he encouraged all club members to see if their own kids or grandkids might like to join.  At this point questions came up concerning the clubs attempt at starting a Leo's club here in Cadillac last year and if that still might be a possibility in the future.  Lion Tim told the club that they still had the green light to start a LEO they just needed to find a faculty advisor and that's what stopped things last year, no one wanted the job.

King Lion Rick asked for any volunteer to escort me down to the Evart Lions Club on the 23rd to officially pass me on so I may begin my next 30 days with a new club.  Lions Carl Daily and the Club Secretary Harry Engels both offered to take me and see me off.  Finally I reminded everyone that I had District and State pins for sale and was able to sell a few more of each before the meeting was adjourned and the "TONK" Poker was started.

I wandered around and said my goodbyes before leaving, thanking the club for the hospitality they had shown me over the past month and the new friendships I have made.  I should be back here again in a few months after I finish my first round of visits with all the other clubs, and who knows I might make a surprise visit if Cadillac has any events or fundraisers before then.

Well the next time you hear from me I should've started my 30 day stay with the Evart club, on my calendar for next month so far I've been invited over to Luther club on Saturday October 10th to their Dinner - Auction - Dance, then a few days later on Tuesday October 13th I'll meet up with my ZC and we'll make our 4th and last visitation down to the Baldwin Lions Club, then it's back to Evart for their special musical meeting on the 14th and then finally I'm off to a Region meeting in Clare with my ZC the next night on Thursday the 15th...PHEW!

Here I am booked a month in advance already and I haven't even made it to my second club yet.  At least I have the next 8 days off to rest.  Until next time!

Thanks

3rd Visitation Evart Lions Club

It's September 23rd and I started my 30 day stay with the Evart Lions Club tonight - it was fun pizza and cake almost like they were throwing me a welcome party.  I'll be completing the rest of this story just as soon as the cake sugar rush wears off and I can clear my head enough to write.
